Incredible Inedible Eggs

Bad weather can often mean trying something you might not have done in the sun. This week has been on the miserable side here in Sydney, so I ventured out to Darling Harbour in the rain to see what the Sea Life Sydney Aquarium had to offer. It was pretty crowded; I think everyone had had the same idea but luckily there’s an awful lot to see!

Dugong dude

Although the cheeky Dugongs are the best thing to see by far, there are a number of places where you can see eggs in and out of water. The Shark nursery had a youngster swimming around, as well as what looked very much like mermaids’ purses hung up on a washing line. A mermaid’s purse is the name given to the egg case of sharks, skates and chimearas. The egg inside is already fertilised so the baby is left to develop without needing constant attention from the mother. It is also called a devil’s purse or the scientific name is Chondrichthyes. Halfway round the aquarium there is a touch friendly pool with blue starfish, barnacles, clams and shark eggs.

This interesting spiral is a Port Jackson Shark Egg!

I like it much more than the regular shark eggs because of the helical shape. It is made out of collagen, which is smooth to touch and very strong – unlike the shell of a chicken egg made from calcite. When shark eggs are laid, each one is attached to something anchored to the sea floor; usually seaweed. Here are some fully grown Port Jackson Sharks. They are fairly easy to identify due to the harness markings around the eyes and across the body.

SEDon’t worry though, they’re not interested in eating humans!

A Niche Quiche Lunch

Picture yourself on a sunny Sunday, somewhat fatigued from a great Saturday evening at a food and wine show. On top of that, you’ve been lugging bags to your new home. This may lead to some prepared food shopping and for me, that meant quiche.

I went for the Hegy’s Leek and Bacon quiche.

Hegy's QuicheIt takes roughly half an hour to heat before you can tuck in. Paired with a crunchy fennel and red pepper salad it went down a treat.

  • Pastry – moreish with some crumble at the top
  • Egg centre – firm and delicious
  • Flavours – the leek and bacon were nicely balanced with the eggs and pastry

6/10 Good hot or cold, simple and tasty.

Happy Chinese or Lunar New Year! Celebrations and eggs in Sydney

The celebrations for Chinese New Year began in Sydney on the 24th January and being a new Sydneysider I had to go and check them out. Venturing into the city on Sunday afternoon to catch a few lion dances, queue for Emperor’s Cream puffs in Chinatown and secure a spot for the Twilight Parade, I wore red to get into the spirit of things.ChinatownEmperor's Cream PuffFlying horses of the Twilight Parade

Earlier in the week I paid a visit to Pure Wholefoods in Manly.

 http://www.purewholefoods.com.au

It has a central location, indoor and outdoor seating, as well as selling a wide selection of certified organic fruit, veg, health foods and books. It has a green and brown interior with a forest print wall and an illustrated blackboard for specials. I found the staff fairly relaxed and informal though polite, despite coming across older reviews who said the staff were rather rude. The menu caters for vegan, vegetarian and raw diners, as well as the average omnivores. Soft music is played, like acoustic covers of Beatles tracks and Cyndi Lauper’s Time After Time

For lunch at Pure Wholefoods Manly I had Nasi Goreng:

  • Brown rice with mixed green veg – The rice was supple and the vegetables were just right.
  • Medium hot flavour with Chilli, Garlic, Ginger, Tamari, Coriander, Lemon and Shallots – A nice blend though not as complex as I had hoped
  • Fried egg – firm white, not greasy, runny yolk that soaked into the rice.

Nasi Goreng

6.5/10 Tasty fried egg but the overall flavour could have been more intense.

Shark rocket, Hot tennis and a visit to an explorer

Hemingways eggs web“wonder what day god created the egg’ ‘how should we know? we should not question. our stay on earth is not for long. let us rejoice and believe and give thanks’. ‘eat a egg” ― Ernest HemingwayThe Sun Also Rises

Led down the hill to hemingway’s in Manly on a warm Saturday morning, I knew eggs were in store. Although it wasn’t as hot as its set to be this weekend, you certainly got the best of the sun sat outside facing the beach. Unlike the tennis players in Melbourne, we required no ice vests.

hemingway’s (with a small ‘H’) is pretty cool: named after a famous author explorer, walls lined with books, honest staff. This is enhanced by the food and drink menu…although they have a tendency to run out of food. Best advice is get there reasonably early to avoid disappointment.

Cappuccino’s served in Hendrick’s teacups are a nice touch, as are the options for something greasy or healthy.

My hemingway’s breakfast consisted of:

  • 2 soft boiled eggs – 1 perfect, the other overdone though both organic
  • Crunchy Quinoa – an absolutely toasted crunch of a winner
  • Confit Salmon – just right both in texture and portion size.
  • Goat’s curd
  • Rocket

7/10 They ran out of toast so we could’nt mop up the yolk

Another acquisition by Google and the first guest post on Eggs in Oz

Google are set to take on Nest Labs for a substantial sum, and, Eggs in Oz have a new perspective and post. It’s a day for growth.

Today’s post is from Tim Gray, Assistant Sommelier at Limewood Hotel, UK (check them out http://www.limewoodhotel.co.uk/home/ : it’s gorgeous).

Tim’s review is a retrospective from his trip to Australia for the Lion’s Tour last year.

“my aussie eggs…the most memorable experience was one Sunday morning when we walked along the beaches and headland from Manly to Dee Why. We went for breakfast in a place called Sea Bar Cafe – I had poached eggs on bagels and the eggs were awesome – fluffy and flavoursome and of course runny. I would go as far as saying it is one of the best breakfasts I have ever had, and that is partly down to the eggs”

No rating from Tim but certainly sounds idyllic. Thanks Tim!
